This was a very interesting place to visit. We visited Lincolns Tomb after visiting his home, the museum/library, New Old Salem, and other historical places in the area.
It was enlightening getting to walk in Lincolns shoes for a bit. Going back in time and getting to see the world through his eyes. We discussed the differences in how families worked back then vs now.
There was no line at the tomb. We went through slowly and soaked it all in. I suggest going and checking it out if you are in Springfield, IL.
This place was pretty incredible. First off the drive up to the memorial gives you a great view of how elaborate it is. Second, the architecture is everything you would expect it to be. Third, you get a great feeling of how important this structure is when walking around inside. It was designed very well. But fitting for such a pivotal president.
If you're ever near the area, Lincoln's resting place is absolutely worth going go see. You can read about things like this in a book, but the opportunity to see it in person is like no other!
Cemetery Full of History, Started at the original receiving vault the stored lincolns body before making my way to the monument and Tomb, upon entry a worker will full you in on any History you may need, Nice clean place definitely worth checking out.
Learned a few things about Lincoln and the plot to steal and ransom his body. Don’t miss the older tomb he was moved from. Also, veterans from other wars are here, including the Revolution.
As a kid I never realized how big this place was now as an adult I really admire how big it is. There are some real ornate gravestones to view. As I was walking around taking pictures I took a break under a tree and I noticed something in the trunk of it A Letterbox I have never found one in my adventures before so I thought it was pretty cool. This is also a great place for pictures the open air is perfect for photos.
Beautiful display of respect. Well done. An amazing cemetery. So much History
The tomb is located in Oak Ridge Cemetery and there's enough signage that you certainly can't miss it. Or just follow the parade of school buses that are bringing and endless number of kids here to see it.
That said, you will want to wait until after all the kids have been and gone through the inside. It is underground and there is nothing to break down the echo. I lucked out and arrived during a school bus gap so I mostly had the inside to myself to see the tomb and view the statues of Lincoln inside and read the quotes.
I've been to the Lincoln Monument and I've been to Gettysburg. This was definitely worth it for me.
Visited in the early morning before anything was open (to kill time until my appointment.) I'm not from this area, so it was my first time visiting this sort of monument. I didn't go inside or on the tour, as it wasn't open that early, but I preferred it that way. It was quiet and peaceful. The monuments were impressive. Locals ran laps in the park and some tourist-y families walked by to check the tour times and signate. I was intrigued by the Pennies stuffed into the gate behind the tomb and the apparent tradition of rubbing the bust's nose.
